Romania is planning to acquire around 300 Lynx infantry fighting vehicles from the German defense company Rheinmetall.
According to a report from Euronews, the deal was finalized after meetings between Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger and senior Romanian officials, including the Minister of Economy Radu Miruță and Minister of Defense Ionuț Moșteanu.
Company representatives stated that the agreement includes provisions for local manufacturing, marking a new phase in defense cooperation between Romania and Germany.
The Lynx system, developed by Rheinmetall, is a family of next-generation modular armored combat vehicles. Its main configurations include the KF31 and KF41 models.
According to the company, the Lynx was designed to serve as a highly mobile, protected, and reconfigurable infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), capable of operating as a command vehicle, reconnaissance platform, or medical evacuation unit, depending on the mission module installed.
The initial batch will consist of 298 combat vehicles, with 46 of them delivered in variants built on the same chassis. Romanian authorities confirmed that part of the production will be carried out locally once parliamentary approval is obtained.
Rheinmetall already operates in Romania through its Mediaș unit, but the company has also announced plans to build what it describes as “the world’s most modern gunpowder factory” in Victoria, Brașov County. The plant will receive a €500 million investment and create “hundreds of jobs,” according to the company.
